Female fertility is defined as a woman’s ability to conceive and bear children. The concept of fertility is closely related to fecundity, but these terms refer to different things. Fecundity is the physiological potential for reproduction, which can depend on age, health, and willingness to conceive.

Fertility, on the other hand, refers to the actual ability to produce offspring. Unlike fecundity, fertility can be statistically measured through fertility rates.

Infertility is the result of a disease (an interruption, cessation, or disorder of body functions, systems, or organs) of the male or female reproductive tract which prevents the conception of a child or the ability to carry a pregnancy to delivery. The duration of unprotected intercourse with failure to conceive should be about 12 months before an infertility evaluation is undertaken, unless medical history, age, or physical findings dictate earlier evaluation and treatment.

If you’ve been trying to get pregnant for more than a year, you may have infertility.

Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system that impairs one of the body’s most basic functions: the conception of children. Conception is a complicated process that depends upon many factors.

  • On the production of healthy sperm by the man and healthy eggs by the woman;
  • Unblocked fallopian tubes that allow the sperm to reach the egg;
  • The sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg when they meet;
  • The ability of the fertilized egg (embryo) to become implanted in the woman’s uterus;
  • And sufficient embryo quality.
  • Finally, for the pregnancy to continue to full term, the embryo must be healthy and the woman’s hormonal environment adequate for its development.

When just one of these factors is impaired, infertility can result.

Going to see a fertility specialist may help a couple figure out why they’re not conceiving. Women see a reproductive endocrinologist and men see a urologist who specializes in fertility. In some (10% or more) cases, though, there may not be an obvious reason why a couple can’t conceive. This is known as unexplained infertility. Fertility treatments can often help these couples with unexplained infertility.

Thanks to continued advances in reproductive medicine, in vitro fertilization (IVF), has become a highly successful treatment for infertility.

IVF treatments are more invasive than other treatments and can be a costly option, particularly for patients lacking fertility insurance coverage.

Although IVF is the most expensive infertility treatment on a per-cycle basis, even lower intensity treatments such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) may generate significant costs, yet these procedures are rarely considered in estimates of infertility treatment costs.

Consider having an infertility evaluation if you:

  • Are age 34 or younger and not pregnant after having regular, unprotected sex for one year.
  • Are a woman who is age 35 or older and not pregnant after having regular, unprotected sex for six months.
  • Have an irregular menstrual cycle

Yes. Infertility is not just a woman’s concern.

A woman may undergo several different tests when being evaluated for infertility, such as:

  • A urine test to measure levels of a certain hormone that can show if and when she ovulates.
  • A blood test to measure levels of different hormones involved in ovulation and fertility.
  • Imaging tests, if needed, to look at reproductive organs such as the fallopian tubes and uterus to make sure there aren’t any issues affecting her fertility

An infertility evaluation for a man usually involves a semen analysis to check his sperm. He also may need to have an ultrasound to check whether there are any problems with the ducts or tubes through which semen travels.

Certain lifestyle factors can affect your fertility. If you’re a woman, being overweight or underweight, exercising excessively, drinking alcohol, and smoking cigarettes can make it more difficult to get pregnant. If you’re a man, smoking, heavy drinking, using marijuana and taking anabolic steroids can reduce your sperm count or lead to erectile dysfunction.
